Probably one of the most astounding things about Light Therapy is witnessing how quickly it can work and the almost immediate effect it can have on relieving pain. Time after time, we’ve seen the profound results achieved with Light Therapy for humans and animals. The animals are the quickest read, as animals do not lie. Humans can have preconceived notions, ideas, or expectations that can inhibit an immediate reaction. Even the staunchest disbeliever changes their mind once their body has shown them how it works and the results cannot be disputed.
When we look at pain within the body and the effects it has on quality of life and everyday living, there is far more than simply feeling, acknowledging, dismissing or treating what might be the cause of pain. Pain has a very complex set of variables, and though there may be identifiable similarities, it affects each of us in different ways that are unique to our biological makeup and chemistry. For purposes of working with clients, we need to define which type of pain it is. There are two categories of pain. Acute, and Chronic. Briefly, Acute pain would be, for example, when you touch a hot stove, your body responds by signaling to pull your hand back immediately to prevent further and prolonged damage. Acute pain is usually temporary. Chronic pain, on the other hand, is more complicated since there is usually a source, which may or may not be easily identifiable, for the pain that continues to signal over weeks, months, or years, that something is wrong and needs attention. Chronic pain has been defined as pain or discomfort that lasts over 12 weeks and, quite often, the affects of chronic pain go far beyond the pain itself. Reports and studies* show that over 100 million in the U.S. alone suffer from chronic pain. Over 36 million miss work, at costs of an estimated 200 to 300 Million dollars a year in lost productivity, days worked, lost wages or the inability to keep regular working hours due to chronic pain. Pain has a profound effect on the mind as well as the body – depression, anxiety, and loss of confidence have been shown to be direct results of chronic pain.
